It is hard to believe that we are beginning our fourth week of school here at IAB. Please let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Faith Ro and I am the new secondary guidance counselor. I have worked as a guidance counselor for 15 years and have been enjoying my international experience with IAB. My family and I relocated to Beijing this summer from Chicago, IL. I have three children who are currently attending IAB as well. It has been a month full of changes as we adjust to our new surroundings. We've started the school year off and running. I've been busy getting to know the students at the Yaao campus and have had the opportunity to visit many classrooms. I have enjoyed hanging out in the lunch room and out on the field with students. Mrs. Wong and I have also been meeting with the 12th graders as they begin to make college plans. I look forward to many more opportunities to get to know the secondary students. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.
During the month of September, students, faculty, and staff at IAB will be focusing on the character trait of Orderliness.
- or'derliness noun. or'derly adjective in good order; regular; well regulated; of good behaviour; quiet; being on duty. adverb regularly; methodically. (Chambers Dictionary)
Orderliness does not just mean to have everything in its place in a structured and methodical way, but orderliness also allows us all to live more effective and efficient lives. As we begin a new school year, I pray that each student may be able to set a goal to be orderly and effective in all that they set out to do.
We would like to congratulate Mr. McDonald on his appointment to the ACAMIS Board of Directors.
ACAMIS stands for the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools.
ACAMIS is governed by a board of directors which is elected by the member schools. When a member of the board has to resign because they leave the region, the board can appoint a replacement.
IAB has been a member for about 5 years. We participate in a variety of ACAMIS activities including sports, MUN and conferences. Mr. McDonald's inclusion on the board will give us greater representation in ACAMIS decisions and help raise the profile of the school.
He has also been invited to be a part of the Care For Children School Advisory Board. Care For Children operates a school for special needs children in Beijing.
Uniform & Hawk Hoodie Order With cooler days just around the corner, it's time to order winter uniform and/or school ‘Hawks Hoodies'. Order forms will be sent home at the elementary campus. For secondary school students wanting to order hoodies, please see Miss Hannah in the office.
September 14 is the deadline for orders and payment with delivery taking 1 month. So don't delay! :o)
Elementary School
From today we will be sending home one IAB Weekly with the oldest child of each family at the Lido campus. This wise suggestion came from one of our parents - thanks for your feedback!
Elementary Library
In response to the parents' request, the elementary library will now be open from 8:00-8:30 every morning. The kids and parents will be able to come in to check out books. Enjoy!
Dictionary Day is coming at Lido! Students will dress up and spend the day doing lots of ‘dictionary' activities which will enable them to increase their vocabulary in a fun way. Very soon your child will be told what their ‘word of the day' will be. Please help them learn the word, the definition and make a costume accordingly.
Secondary School
As you may know, Enrichment Week [September 13-17] is fast approaching! Information was sent home with your child last week - please ensure you received this. If you have any questions, please contact any of the teachers who will on your child's trip.
Updated passports are required; if your child's passport is or will soon be out of date, you will need to take care of that and submit an updated copy to the IAB office a.s.a.p. Students are required to bring their actual passports on the EW trips as they are required for registration at their accommodation.
For all full-time students, Enrichment Week is a required program of alternative educational experiences sponsored by International Academy of Beijing. It is a regular school week because the courses offered have educational objectives, but it is different in that courses are offered in a format which most often does not resemble traditional classroom instruction. Our hope is that students will be exposed to people, places, and ideas with which they do not ordinarily come in contact.
Below is a list of the destinations by grade, and contact teacher should you have further questions:
Grade 6 - Xi'an - Mrs. Lay
Grade 7 - Grand Canal - Mr. Schlieff
Grade 8 - Qingdao - Ms. Kapraun
Grade 9 - Guillin/Yangshuo - Mrs. Olsen
Grade 10 - Hailar - Mr. Pardales
Grade 11 & 12 - Beidahe - Mr. Antonides
EAGLES! LIONS! BULLS! SHARKS!
The House lists for this year have been announced, and all of the elementary students will receive their new House shirts this week; secondary students will get theirs either later this week or after they return from Enrichment Week. The shirts are brightly colored and represent the House, or team, your child is a part of for his or her years at IAB. We will have several House competitions throughout the year, culminating with our school-wide Sports Day in May. We will kick things off at the elementary school this week. On Friday, we will have our first House Shirts Day. Elementary students should wear their new House shirts to school. They may wear jeans or shorts on the bottom.
A belated thanks to our secondary students who kindly volunteered time two weeks ago on Sunday to help Sports Beijing with their registration! Way to go students!!

Sport Report
The season has gotten off to an amazing start! The U14 boys soccer team dominated the ISB U13 team 5:0 in the season opener last Tuesday. Goals by Michael Sung (2) Wayne Chung (2) and Eric Park. The U12 boys played a good game as well and tied against ISB U12 team 4:4. Our girls fought hard with the U14 girls drawing against ISB 2:2 with goals scored by Juliana and Dianne. The U12 team had a tougher match and went down 0:4.
The High School Volleyball teams are also set for a great season. Saturday they travelled to Tianjin for games against IST. The girls played well and won both their matches easily 3:0. The boys found the first set a little challenging as they didn't have time to warm up, however they found their form quickly and finished the set up 3:1. The second match they were in true form against TIS handling the game well and bringing home a 3:0 win.
Congratulations to the High School Hawks! An excellent start to the season!
Boys will have one game this Wednesday vs CISB. U 14 girls soccer will have a game vs CISB this Thursday. We are looking forward to good news from them.
Well done teams!
It was fabulous to have so many parents supporting the Hawks! Thank you! Supporters are always welcome at games, if you would like to attend and need information on how to get there, please contact our athletic department:
